Staying safe during the heatwave: use cool packs and wet towels to cool down effectively!
The ongoing heatwave brings not only high temperatures but often poor air quality as well. People with allergies in particular should take extra care at this time of year. To help you get through the hot days feeling well and healthy, we’ve put together some practical tips. The focus here is on targeted cooling of the nape of the neck.
Why targeted cooling of the neck is so effective
The neck area is close to major blood vessels. When you cool this area, the blood cools down more quickly and the sensation of heat throughout the body decreases. This provides rapid relief without putting unnecessary strain on the circulation.
How to use cooling packs correctly
- Preparation: Keep two or three cool packs in the fridge. They should not be frozen solid. The cool temperature of the fridge is often more comfortable for prolonged application than the cold of the freezer.
- Protecting your skin: Wrap the cool pack in a thin cloth. This will prevent cold irritation or frostbite.
- Placement: Place the cool pack on the back of your neck for 10–15 minutes.
- Allow for breaks: Give your skin a break of at least ten minutes after each application. Repeat the cycle as needed.
- A tip for when you’re out and about: You can find flexible gel cool packs at the chemist’s that mould well to the back of your neck. A small cool bag will keep them cold for longer.
Wet towels on the back of the neck – simple and effective
- Quick to do: Dampen a small towel with cool (not ice-cold) water, wring it out and place it on the back of your neck.
- Make the most of evaporative cooling: A gentle breeze – e.g. from a fan – enhances the cooling effect without causing your skin to get too cold.
- Refreshing made easy: As soon as the towel starts to warm up, dampen it again briefly. Keep several small towels to hand.
- For sensitive skin: Apply a few drops of lukewarm water to the towel instead of cold water to prolong the cooling effect.
More heat protection tips for every day
- Avoid the sun: Avoid direct sunlight between 11 am and 3 pm. Seek shade or stay in cool indoor spaces.
- Stay well hydrated: Keep your fluid levels stable. Water, unsweetened teas and isotonic drinks are ideal. It’s best to cut down on alcohol and sugary drinks.
- Light clothing: Wear light, breathable fabrics (e.g. cotton, linen) and a hat.
- Keep rooms cool: Air your home early in the morning and late in the evening; keep windows, curtains and blinds closed during the day. Fans or air conditioning can also help maintain comfortable temperatures.
- Make use of shaded areas: Move outdoor activities to the morning or evening hours and choose shaded spots.
Extra tips for people with allergies
- Be mindful of indoor air quality: Use pollen filters on your windows or ventilate preferably at times when pollen levels are low (often early in the morning).
- Protect your skin and eyes: Wear sunglasses and regularly moisturise your skin with a light, hydrating cream.
- Stick to your cooling strategy: Wet towels placed on the back of the neck are particularly soothing for irritated skin, as they provide relief without causing extreme temperature changes.
Stay mindful, drink plenty of fluids and focus on cooling your neck in particular. This will help you get through the heatwave safely.
