Sunshine allows intensive pollen count!

In the coming week, the sun will dominate and the daily maximum temperatures will mostly rise to well over 20 °C. These weather conditions therefore allow an intensive pollen count and corresponding exposure.

Only in the birch season does this no longer apply, as most plants have already shed their catkins and can therefore release little or no pollen. However, some birch pollenallergy sufferers continue to experience allergic symptoms. These can be caused by a cross-reaction with the beech, oak and walnut trees that are still in bloom.

But the next phase of the pollen season is already just around the corner: the grasses are in bloom. Flowering foxtail, tufted and panicle grasses have already been spotted in Vienna. They can already lead to low to moderate pollution at some locations. According to our model data, it is not expected to reach full bloom until the end of the week.

The plane trees have finished flowering. Only along plane tree avenues can there still be isolated pollen releases, but even here most of the plants have already faded.

However, the manna ash has started to bloom in Vienna in the last few days. Like the lilac, it belongs to the olive tree family and can again lead to symptoms in people who are sensitized to pollen from this plant family. However, as both manna ash and lilac are insect-pollinated, relevant pollen exposure is only to be expected in the immediate vicinity of the plants.

Rapeseed is in bloom around Vienna. Allergy sufferers should avoid the vicinity of rapeseed fields to prevent additional exposure.

The white flakes that can currently be seen in the air are poplar absorbent cotton. It cannot itself trigger allergic reactions as it is not pollen but poplar seeds and seed hairs.

Conifers have also started to flower in the Vienna area and their pollen can already be registered at our measuring station. In the coming days, it is possible that it will lead to yellow deposits on cars or window sills. However, neither pine pollen nor spruce or fir pollen can cause allergic reactions.

Other types of pollen in the ambient air: maple, boxwood, yew, mulberry, carnation, rose, horse chestnut, sour grass, walnut and cypress. These are of minor allergological importance.
