Why Thunderstorms Increase Allergen Exposure

Ahead of thunderstorms, ambient ozone and humidity rise, altering the surface characteristics of pollen particles. Increased moisture drives osmotic swelling and promotes mechanical fragmentation (bursting effect). Concurrently, ozone oxidizes allergen-relevant molecular structures, increasing their biological availability. Gusty pre-frontal winds transport both intact and pre-fragmented pollen fractions into the near-ground breathing zone. At the same time, resuspended fine particles act as carrier structures for allergy-inducing proteins and amplify pro-inflammatory airway responses. Net effect: a higher burden of small particles capable of deep bronchial penetration meets pre-inflamed mucosa—resulting in more pronounced symptoms among sensitized individuals.

Monitor weather alerts; move indoors before the storm front. 

  • Keep a short-acting bronchodilator at hand; perform nasal irrigation post-exposure. 

  • Close windows during gusts; use a HEPA-equipped air purifier.
