Distribution
Widely distributed in the Northern Hemisphere. Mainly found in temperate climates, with some species thriving in subtropical climates of Mexico (southernmost distribution). Naturalized in some countries of the Southern Hemisphere (e.g., Australia, New Zealand).
Morphology
Habit — Tree. Foliage — Summer-green, heart-shaped leaf blade. Reproduction — Axillary inflorescence consisting of three or more flowers, an elongated bract is fused with the inflorescence, flowers are bisexual and radially symmetrical, white to yellow petals, fruit is a nutlet.
