Distribution
Widespread in the northern hemisphere, in South America, Central Africa, and Australasia, mainly in temperate climates but also in mountainous regions of the tropics.

Morphology
Habit  — Shrub, semi-shrub, or small tree. Foliage — Summer-green, leaves pinnate, leaflets elliptical, leaf margin usually serrated. Reproduction — Umbrella-like or corymb-like inflorescences, individual flowers bisexual and radially symmetrical, berry-like drupes (black, blue, or red).

European elder (Sambucus nigra).
