Almost worldwide (except Antarctica), naturalized in Australia, New Zealand, and Argentina. Habitats — Plains to mountainous regions, cultivated in orchards or as ornamental trees (cherry blossom).

Habit — Tree or shrub. Foliage — Summer-green, leaves variable in shape, leaf margin serrated. Important fruit varieties. Mainly insect-pollinated, low-amount pollen producers.
